Umshika-shika tells the story of Ace Magwaza (Bongani Mkhathini), the feared kingpin of Vosloorus and one of the most notorious crime lords in Gauteng. Ace operates a lucrative criminal empire specializing in human organ harvesting, occasional prostitution, and drug trafficking. His violent tendencies and need for absolute control lead him to paranoia as his organization gets attacked by an invisible enemy. Little does he know that the attacks are related to his parents and their deeply hidden criminal past.

Ace relentlessly begs his daughter Nomagugu “Pinky” Magwaza (Snowy Msibi) to join him and learn the ropes so that she can take over should something tragic happen to him. However, Pinky is a devoted Christian who openly condemns her father’s criminal lifestyle.

Plot Summary

Ace Magwaza’s tentacles are so wide-reaching that people from various walks of life find themselves somehow affected or involved, willingly or not. His closest associates include Jericho Molepe, Mavelegeshe, Rex, and Sebata Seokamela. Ace later gets shot, and against his will, Sebata authorizes Motebang to fake Ace’s death and assist him in defecting to Lesotho. From this point onwards, the entire story proceeds under the assumption that Ace is deceased, until the nosy Detective Romeo pokes too far into the matter.

The family secrets run deep, including the fact that Leburu Moloi’s daughter, Lizzy Magwaza, was abducted by Ace’s father, Gordon Magwaza, 23 years ago and raised as a Magwaza. Gordon did this to silence Leburu after his arrest following some cash-in-transit heists conducted for Gordon, long before Gordon turned away from a life of crime to become a staunch Christian.
